| Standard
LCD screens are not legible in bright light environments. Specific
technologies exist to provide outdoor or sunlight readable LCD screens.
Note: pour
| As far as outdoor legibility is concerned, there are 3 main types of LCD displays: 1-
Standard LCD technology, readable in normal indoor light; they use
backlight (fluorescent or LED), they are called transmissive. They are
not legible in very bright environmment, not to mention in direct
sunlight, because external brightness overwhelms the backlight. 2-
OPtical bonding LCD : indoor legibility is excellent (unchanged), it is good outdoor
in bright light, poor in direct sun light. 3-
Transflective LCD : Legibility is excellent in all environments. The outdoor light is reused by the LCD panel to enhance its brightness, without increasing electric consumption. Actual brightness in the sun is higher than indoor. It is necessary to compensate the extremely high brightness in sunny conditions.
Note
: independantly from the 3 types of LCD mentionned above, LCD can be
equiped with high brightness lights. In that case, electric consumption
is increased. |
Environment | Description | Indoor Performance | Outdoor Performance | Indoor | Standard LCD module | Excellent | Poor | Outdoor | Antiglare surface to reduce sun reflection | Excellent | Good | Sunlight | Transflective type LCD, enhance brightness under sunlight | Excellent | Excellent |
| | | Transmissive is the Standard technology used in most consumer and commercial notebooks.
The LCD light is produced by a backlight using lamps or LED. | Reflective LCDs use the outside light. The light
is reflected by a mirror behind the LCD. This technology works in bright environments. Reflective LCDs are not bright enough in most indoor environments, and invisible in dark rooms or outside at night. Frontlights can be added to reflective LCDs.
| Transflective LCDs combine both transmissive (backlight) and reflective technologies (mirror).
The
mirror used in transflective LCDs must let the backlight through and
reflect outside tlight at the same time; therefore transmissive
LCDs are not as bright outdoors as pure reflective LCDs.
